Are you wondering where the good-paying writing jobs are online?
It’s one of the questions I get asked the most. When I tell people I’m writing $100 blogs and $2,000 articles for online clients, many almost can’t believe it. But it’s true — and I see more good-pay opportunities popping up all the time, now that the economy is starting to move again.
In general, I find two types of online writing work pays on the low end: Small-business website work, and blogging for portals where their only business is trying to monetize your content. You know the ones I’m talking about.
How do you find the better-paying gigs? First, you need to know what you’re looking for.
Here are 10 types of markets I find pay well:
- Major corporations
- Companies in lucrative niches such as financial services, technology, law, and healthcare
- Companies with monthly-subscription or service revenue
- National magazines
- Trade magazines that serve niche audiences
- Niche publications that serve upscale readers
- Venture-capital-funded startups
- Companies that operate multiple websites
- Companies that sell a real-world product or service
- Companies that existed before the Internet
How can you connect with these types of clients and start earning more?
First off, you have to be mentally ready to break out of your current pay level and move up.
You’ve probably heard the expression that if you keep doing what you’ve always done, you’ll keep getting what you’ve always got. That’s really true for finding freelance-writing gigs.
First, you need to believe good-paying work is out there. I can tell you it is, but I’ve had writers just plain call me a liar. Their minds aren’t ready to accept the idea that great pay is available.
Once you believe that you can earn more than you are earning now, it’s time to explore new marketing methods to connect with better-paying clients.
How can you market yourself to good-paying clients? I’ll give you a hint — it’s mostly not done by answering ads on Craigslist.

Well said, Carol. I was a business journalist for a dozen years and got a lot of freelance gigs writing for corporates, but mostly professional firms. Lawyers and accountants like to think they can write, but some of them recognise there’s writing, and there’s writing. One of the most interesting was a weekly column in a very well-read regional paper on technology – not everyday geekery but stuff on the edge – whacky ideas, scary ideas. It was in the lead-up to Dean Kamen’s release of the Segway, so his clever marketing ploys got a column and several updates as the mystery product got closer to the reveal. It was sponsored by a local corporate law firm, so I got paid very well for doing two hours’ research and two hours’ careful writing.

easier said than done, finding those kinds of careers and jobs is like finding a needle in a haystack!it’s so hard to find work these days! it is like everybody are getting laid off at work!! but you have a point there, people should try to go back to the conventional jobs and not everyone should go out venturing on online jobs!
