If you haven’t heard already, Google+ now has business pages you can set up for your writing. Although the pages are very similar to the Facebook fan pages, there are big differences between the two. After using both, I must say, I’m liking the Google+ business pages much better than the Facebook fan pages.
Google+ vs. Facebook
For business purposes, I like Google+ better than Facebook now. There seems to be much less garbage on Google+ than on Facebook. All in all, Facebook seems to be going the Myspace direction with the spam, lack of professionalism, and I guess, the newness is just wearing off. This might be one reason I prefer the Google+ pages over the Facebook pages now, but I also think Google+ has better features that help professionally.
I like the fact Google+ has the huddles, so you can discuss certain topics with people who share the same interest. It allows you to control who views what posts better, reducing the amount of “spamming” you post to people who don’t have an interest in certain posts. I know, I will stop following pages when I’m ambushed by a bunch of posts I don’t find relevant, and by controlling this on my own pages, I decrease the risk of losing certain followers.
Like I said before, Google+ just seems to have a much higher professional feel to it, kind of like LinkedIN. The people you find on Google+ seem to have a purpose, whereas, many of those you find on Facebook don’t. Although there aren’t as many people on Google+ when compared to Facebook, the quality of the people on Google+ is higher. I see more daily benefits from Google+ use that I just don’t see with Facebook. Even if I don’t use my Google+ account everyday, I gain more followers and shares than Facebook.
So which do you prefer, the Google+ business pages or the Facebook fan pages?

Alyssa, thank you for a very helpful post! (Timely, too — I’m just trying to figure out where social media fit in my editing/proofreading endeavor.)
I’ll look forward to hearing what others, especially those using social media, have to say on the subject!
I was thrilled to read and hear that Google+ now offers business pages; I haven’t created mine yet.
I also believe Facebook is becoming more like MySpace. I use the fan pages but haven’t seen much movement. I took advantage of the $50 they sent me for advertising but once that expires, I probably won’t post another ad.

I’m really liking Google+ as well. I’ve decided that Facebook is for friends and family, and Google+ is for business. I believe Google+ is here to stay and will continue to strengthen and improve.
