It’s a well known fact eBook sales continue to skyrocket while print sales continue to plummet in the U.S. But, according to a recent study, this is now a global occurrence, and countries across the globe are reporting an increase in eBook sales. With this growth of eBook sales throughout the world, what does this mean for the self published author? Should marketing efforts change to keep up with the global demand for eBooks?
EBook Sales Increase
The number of print sales struggle to stay afloat as the variety of electronic reading devices increase the demand for eBooks. Often, we only see how the increased sales are transforming reading as we know it in the U.S., but really the demand for eBooks is a global matter.
A recent survey released by Canada’s National Reading Campaign found that eBook sales have not only increased in the U.S. but France and Canada as well. In fact, it appears the Canadian eBook demand is growing faster than the current demand in the U.S. Why the sudden increase in Canada? It’s believed to be attributed to the fact the Canadian eBook market is still relatively new. The U.S. eBook market is older, while the technological wave of electronic reading devices has just recently hit Canada with the release of the Kobo, which was released around the same time as the Nook in the U.S.
What does it mean for the self published?
So, what does the global increase in eBook sales mean for the self published author? Well, if you play it smart, it means you should broaden your marketing efforts. It’s easy for the self published to focus the majority of their sales in the U.S., but with the growth of eBooks reaching an increasing high, you need to expand to include global distribution of your eBook. You should even consider releasing your book in additional languages as French language book sales have increased by 35 percent.
I can say from my experience with my sales, the majority of my eBook sales are from the U.S., but I do sell a number of copies to the UK and Canada. Every so often, I will have a few sales in other countries as well. This appears to be proof that I can’t limit my marketing to only the U.S. I’m going to increase my marketing efforts to include other countries now as it appears to hold a large potential.
What are your thoughts about the global increase of eBook? Should marketing efforts change to meet the demands?

Continued advances in technology will open up the ebook market to millions of new readers. The publishers who are able to stay the course will reap the benefits.

Very true! Once again, we must adapt as technology transforms.
I believe that self-published authors should be more aggressive in marketing. With the increasing demand for e-Books, who can stop the big publishing companies to dominate the market as they did in printed books?

I have a site that is dedicated to a single eBook that I wrote and it is a wonderful list builder. I don’t even charge for the eBook because I simply want to build the targeted list so that I can sell them the real version of the book, and then seel them the updated version of the book and more. eBooks rock!
